Carter Braxton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter Braxton was another of the wealthy Virginia planters who owned large plantations and slaves and signed the declaration of Independence . He is different than most in two ways that I could find first he wrote and published a “tract” titled Securing the Republic from which the above quote is taken. And he was a moderate urging a go slow attitude about independence he signed the Declaration only to conform with the remainder of the Virginia delegation. He hoped for a reconciliation with England that gave the colonies the same rights as Scots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Braxton was part of the Virginia aristocracy and lived an easy life. With his second wife he had at least 14 children. He did not fight in the revolution but many of his numerous descendants fought in the Civil War, almost exclusively on the Confederate side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence and only 52 Tuesday’s in a year so to make it fit this week around July 4th when we celebrate the signing I’m going to crowd in a few more.
