The photo is of Mt Fuji in Japan. It was one of a packet of Mt Fuji postcards. I bought a quite a few and still ran out of postcards before I ran out of people to send them to.
Travel is the first stimulus for postcards. A distant second is holidays. Some people buy postcards as mementos and many buy them with the intent of sending them and the urge recedes and they end up in a desk drawer somewhere. There certainly are many less postcards for sale at tourist sites than there were a few years ago.
