Marginal Utility is an economic concept that refers to the additional satisfaction or benefit that a consumer derives from consuming one more unit of a good or service. It applies to generosity because a dollar means a lot less to to a well off person than it does to a person doing an entry level job. For example if I leave $5.00 in a hotel room for the cleaner, my life is effected very little, but the cleaner gains quite a bit. Plus I get the warm feeling that comes from doing a generous act.
My friend Doug, of blessed memory, used to advocate leaving a $5.00 tip per person at breakfast. I always try to do that and I think of Doug. We are blessed, December is a good month to remember that and share.
The photo is from a Buddhist Temple complex in Busan, South Korea. Busan, a city of 4ish million people who most of us have never heard of, is a thriving place with a huge harbor and massive amounts of construction going on. It reminded me of Singapore. It is the home of Kia Motors. We learned how to do a tea ceremony. The contrast between the old city and the new city being built on top of it is illustrated by this photo.
