Universal Education

“Education has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.” G. M. Trevelyan The author wrote this in the 1950’s now we have an even vaster population and they mostly can read but don’t bother they watch video instead. So it goes. The photo is from the front of a Christmas card I received a decade or so ago. My dream car is a classic VW van.

Holiday Greetings

Humans need holidays. As soon as a society gets to surplus it starts to have festivals. In the Christian world Christmas tops the list. I’m not a Christian but I love your holiday. Merry Christmas “And to all a goodnight.” Photo is of a Poinsettia tree in the local Mall.

Tactile Satisfaction

When touching something feels good you are experiencing tactile satisfaction. The desire for tactile satisfaction influences us in many ways. Many people want to feel cloth before they buy clothes. perhaps there are enough of them to save retail clothing stores from being destroyed by Amazon. Packaged fresh vegetables has not caught on in the USA yet It is the norm in European markets. Perhaps because many people want the tactile satisfaction of touching the fruit to get sense of its ripeness. It may be… Read More »Tactile Satisfaction

Profit

“The one who serves best profits most.” Photo is of an excellent train mural in Bethesda Maryland. In business and in life focus on serving others and profits will follow. If you focus primarily on profiit you are much more likely to fail.

Happiness

“If one only wished to be happy, this could be easily accomplished; but we wish to be happier than other people, and this is always difficult, for we believe others to be happier than they are.” Baron De Montesquieu This trend has been exacerbated by social media. People post happy pictures from parties and vacations. They rarely post pictures of broken sump pumps or car door dings. And they rarely discuss there feeling of loneliness. Which is worse Cable News or Social Media? A question… Read More »Happiness

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my two favorite holidays.  It is not mixed up with any particular religion, there is no requirement to buy gifts and most stores are closed.Have a wonderful day.  Focus on positive things.  For instance we live in a meritocracy.  Most of us have enough to eat.  In our country most civilians are safe and opportunities are abundant. My Thanksgiving wish is that you are surrounded by family and friends and that you can disagree without animosity.

Give Thanks

“Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot.” Hansa Proverb Happy Thanksgiving Simon Photo is of a plethora of pumpkins at the Dallas Arboretum a few years ago. Hansa refers to the Medieval Hanseatic League in central Europe.

Encyclopedia

“I’ll look it up in the encyclopedia.” A common phrase from about 1911 until about 2000. Now the encyclopedia has been replaced by Google and the phrase sounds archaic. I call the smart phone the Knows Everything Machine. Photo is of my historic encyclopedia. It is from 1914. At home growing up in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s we had the Encyclopedia Americana. My parents bought it on the installment plan. I remember spending hours reading arcane articles.
