“The Apple of My Eye”

“The Apple of My Eye” was originally used in English and perhaps Hebrew to refer to the pupil of the eye. Sometime in the late middle ages it began to mean something or someone that one values greatly. How this happened is murky and of course the first usage is often attributed to Shakespeare. Nurit is the apple of my eye. The only known Saguaro in Bordeaux, France

Change is….

“Very few people have the leverage to change the world. But all of us have the chance to change the people around us, and those actions change what gets built, funded and launched.” Seth Godin

Feeding Animals

A sign at the High Desert Museum in Bend: “Please do not feed the wild animals. They become reliant and soon will want cell phones.” Excellent museum that had a special exhibit about beaver but not a live beaver.

Platitudes on Vacation

The journey is the reward. I found a beach stone that had a beak. After a few days of looking I found another one with a tail. The result was this barely recognizable bird on a window sill. Vacation action. It reminded me of my saying from when I was a hippie carpenter: “Wherever you go, there you are.”

Big Wedding

It probably is not coincidence that we got very serious about the spectacle of the wedding right around the same time we began giving up on the idea of marriage. “Until death do us part” is tough, but a “big day” we can still manage. All you need is big ideas and money. Photo is from a postcard I bought at Heathrow Airport.

People

“There are no uninteresting people in the world.” Yevgeny Yevtushenko The photo was taken in 1955 or 1956. The adults are my Grandparents on my fathers side. Albert and Rebecca. The children from left to right are Simon, Andrew, James (the tallest one), Thomas (in glasses), Chris and John. The first four are my brothers, the offspring of my parents Bill and Kathleen. Chris and John are the sons of Uncle Bob and Aunt Margaret. Bob is my Dad’s brother. All of them are interesting… Read More »People

Happy Hanukkah 2019

We have had a few nice Hanukkah celebrations this week. But it has been a little bittersweet. In recent years we, at least part of the time, had been focused on including Oma. This year she is gone and there is definitely a hole. Next post from Bend. With family photos.

Happy Christmas

In the late 1960s when I was a hippie carpenter in upstate NY I drove a VW van like this. It had a terrible heater and in the winter when I was driving home drunk late at night I would almost freeze to death. Those were the good old days. Merry Christmas

Happy Thanksgiving 2019

My Thanksgiving post from 2008: Happy Thanksgiving by Simon on November 27, 2008 Thanksgiving is one of my two favorite holidays.  It is not mixed up with any particular religion, there is no requirement to buy gifts and most stores are closed. Have a wonderful day.  Focus on positive things.  We live in a meritocracy.  Most of us have enough to eat.  In our country civilians are safe and opportunities are abundant. My Thanksgiving wish is that you are surrounded by family and friends and… Read More »Happy Thanksgiving 2019
