Prosperity

“If you want a better future, trust markets, not bureaucrats.” The Brittlebush are blooming in central Arizona. It is an annual two or three week phenomenon and it turns much of the desert yellow. Wonderful.

Words Seldom Seen: Jetsam

Jetsam Noun: Unwanted material or goods that have been thrown overboard from a vessel. Often to lighten the ship during a storm. Example: “To try and save the ship they heaved the cannon overboard creating a large jetsam field.” So to answer last weeks riddle: flotsam is accidental and jetsam is deliberate. Photo is of a Japanese cannon from WWII rusting away in Palau. Taken in 2015.

Winning the Lottery

On April 1, 2013 I won the lottery to hike Mt Whitney. Lillian and I completed the hike on September 9, 2013. It was epic. Yes that is Guitar Lake. It means you have finished the 100 switchbacks and only have 2 miles to go to summit. Endurance hiking continues to be one of my passions.

The UnLego

Lego is amazing! The parts fit together with incredible precision. Not like real life where the parts don’t fit and everything is a compromise. In real life perfection is not possible. And this is how a new idea starts. Introducing Un-Lego. Model building the way life really is. And it gets better Un-Lego are made in some of the poorest villages in the world. They are not made by machines of even higher precision than the Lego bricks. The packaging is locally sourced and all… Read More »The UnLego

AI App

We need an AI App that sorts, tags, filters, crops and retouches digital photos exactly like you would have done it. The app can ask you to help it make decisions for a while. BTW I have nearly 150,000 digital photos in the cloud. Where eve that is. The photo is a screen shot of my Photos app from February.

Words Seldom Seen: Flotsam

Flotsam Noun: The wreckage of a ship or its cargo found floating on the sea or washed up on the shore. Example: “The flotsam from the sunken ship was approaching the windward shore.” Flotsam differs from jetsam. Next weeks WSS will explain. The photo is of an early Brittlebush bloom on Piestewa Peak.

WWIT about the US 2024 Election

WWIT (What Was I Thinking) about the Trump vs Biden rematch for President of the United States? People tend to be herd animals and they adapt their opinions to match those around them. Currently I predict that Biden will win but it will be close. The photo is of another great Arizona sunset. This post was created using my iPad. I usually use my MacBook but if I can make my iPad work for my blog it will make my summer travels much easier. Let… Read More »WWIT about the US 2024 Election

Moon Theory

The setting moon seen from the “Senior Summit” of Piestewa Peak. But this is not just the setting moon. This one is the “Wolf Moon.” When we saw this moon were speculating about why we are paying more attention to the lunar cycle in recent years. How did the idea of giving specific names to moons become much more popular recently. I have an idea why it might be. In cities for the last hundred years or so burning fossil fuels have made smog and… Read More »Moon Theory

Creamation

“Cremation is my last hope for a smoking hot body” A popular meme with many creators. The photo was taken by my Great, Great Uncle J.C.Burrow at a church yard in Cornwall about 1900. I used it to demonstrate how the treatment of human remains has changed over time.

Serendipity

You can’t plan for serendipity But you can leave space for it. This is another of a continuing series of posts about serendipity. Simon and Serendipity are alliterative and I should be able to make a nice motto out of them but the only one I’ve come up with so far is “Simon Seeks Serendipity.” Which doesn’t work because serendipity has to find you. The very seeking of a serendipitous moment makes it less serendipitous. It requires more work. Meanwhile you can admire me holding… Read More »Serendipity
