Mt Whitney in Three Hats
The new hat on the left shows the elevation of Mt Whitney to be 14,508. The old hat on the right shows an elevation of 14,497.61 The third hat is one I bought in 2013 and lost on Mt Charleston, NV in 2014. It showed a different elevation but still within a few feet of the others. The equipment for measuring the elevation of mountains is getting better so the data are changing which eventually effects the hats. Side story: I first hiked Mt Whitney… Read More »Mt Whitney in Three Hats
Mt Whitney 2015
Two weeks from today I will be making another attempt to hike up Mt Whitney with Rebecca, Anthony and some of their friends. Heidi, Chris, Matt and ? Two years ago I made the hike with Lillian, Ben and Carmella and got to the top. It was an amazing experience in itself. As a bonus the training in preparation for the hike is a way to get in good shape and stay very focused. I have three more serious hikes to make before our departure… Read More »Mt Whitney 2015

Mt Whitney Update
As you read this I should be in Lone Pine or Whitney Portal getting ready to start the Mt Whitney hike. We are planning to leave at 10 pm tonight September 8th to enter the Whitney Zone at about midnight and to hike through the night. This will maximize the amount of time we have on the mountain. Link to the Webcam at the Whitney Portal store Next post should be after we return.
Mt Whitney Goal
I’m training to climb Mt Whitney in September. The Mountain itself is over 14,000 feet high but by driving to Whitney Portal and climbing the Mount Whitney Trail Route the elevation gain is about 6300 feet and the distance is about 12 miles round trip. September is a good time for the climb since the crowds will have decreased substantially. I’m planning to make it a two night three day trip. Lee Summits Whitney My friend Lee F climbed it a few years ago as… Read More »Mt Whitney Goal
The 2014 Mt Hood Expedition
We have a group and we are training. Our guides are Timberline Mountain Guides. The dates are July 16 and 17. It is not as hard as climbing Mt Whitney in terms of distance and elevation gain but some of the hike is over snow and ice fields. On the first day we will be learning how to use crampons and ice axes. On the second day we summit weather and the fates permitting. Lilli and Rebecca are both planning to go on this one… Read More »The 2014 Mt Hood Expedition
Winning the Lottery
On April 1, 2013 I won the lottery to hike Mt Whitney. Lillian and I completed the hike on September 9, 2013. It was epic. Yes that is Guitar Lake. It means you have finished the 100 switchbacks and only have 2 miles to go to summit. Endurance hiking continues to be one of my passions.
Grand Canyon Rim to Rim
On Saturday May 19 I hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim in a day. I’m 70 years old so it’s quite an accomplishment. In this post I’m going to try and figure why I like endurance hiking and at the same time share some of the great photos I (and Heidi) took on the hike.Read More »Grand Canyon Rim to Rim
